Last year, people were most active in selling computers, telephones and household goods

Last year, people were most active in selling computers (18%), various household goods such as household appliances, interior goods (16%) and mobile phones (15%) on the secondary market, according to data on 2023 purchase transactions from branches and the online store of Banknote, the circular retail network owned by DelfinGroup.

In general, people also recycled watches, tools and construction products, game consoles, sports goods, photo and video equipment and other goods*. There is also a trend that the share of purchased goods varies seasonally. For example, in spring and summer, customers prefer to sell computer games, game consoles, TVs and other goods related to active leisure activities at home and the need for appropriate equipment, while after the summer season, purchases of sports and leisure goods, as well as gardening and repair equipment, increase.

"There are several factors why computers, telephones and household goods are among the most popular product categories. For example, on the one hand, the rapid pace of technological development is driving the constant introduction of new devices and technological innovations into the market. On the other hand, it makes you wonder what to do with things that are no longer used but are still working in your household. How to do things in a smart and environmentally friendly way. Therefore, we see that, at times like these, people increasingly choose to put goods back on the market and earn money. In the case of household goods, often things in good condition are just taking up space in the household, so people are motivated to put them back into circulation. This approach encourages the longer use of goods, which ensures the sustainable and efficient circulation of goods," explains Didzis Ādmīdiņš, Chairman of the Management Board of DelfinGroup.

D. Ādmīdiņš predicts that interest in the secondary market will continue to grow this year, given the shift in people's habits towards sustainable and mindful consumption, including the call to renew and keep what is old, rather than buying new. "All these factors contribute to sustainable choices, moving towards a more environmentally friendly consumer culture, which DelfinGroup is also contributing to," adds D. Ādmīdiņš.

Data collected by DelfinGroup on purchases in branches and online show that in 2023, goods and jewellery worth 4.5 million were purchased from clients. Sales of pre-owned, slightly pre-owned and new goods, on the other hand, increased by 29% last year to 14.7 million euros. The company continues to develop the Banknote network, opening new outlets in Riga and other parts of Latvia last year, as well as improving its digital solutions. For example, last year we launched a remote purchase service – pre-owned and slightly pre-ownedfacilitating their return to the secondary market.

The company also continues to develop the largest online store for circular retail in Latvia – veikals.banknote.lv, where more than 50 000 pre-owned and verified goods with warranty are available in one place.
